To truly awaken our vitality and connect with the natural world, we must learn how to digest the sun rather than just existing beneath its rays.
The warmth on your skin after a long winter morning isn’t just a pleasant sensation—it is the literal fuel behind every heartbeat, every deep breath, and every meal on your plate.
We often talk about the sun as something outside of us, an atmospheric backdrop to our daily routines. But biologically and energetically, the sun is the primary life source for this entire planet. The green leaves absorb light to create plant matter; animals eat the plants; we consume both. The oxygen filling your lungs right now is a direct byproduct of solar-driven photosynthesis. In the most literal sense, there is an element of the sun in everything you eat, drink, and breathe.
We are walking, talking containers of solar energy.
Yet, most of us live completely disconnected from this reality. We sprint from climate-controlled homes to covered cars to fluorescent-lit offices, interacting with light only through the artificial glow of our screens. We consume food without thinking about the light that grew it. We treat the sun like a distant satellite rather than our primary metabolic engine.
This brings me to a realization I’ve been sitting with lately: Living well isn’t just about being under the sun; it’s about learning how to “digest” it.
Digesting the sun goes far beyond processing Vitamin D through our skin. It’s an intentional practice of internalizing light and making it a active part of our system:
- Solar Nutrition: It’s choosing real, sun-ripened, whole foods over heavily processed alternatives that have had all the natural light and life stripped out of them.
- Circadian Rhythm: It’s stepping outside within an hour of waking to let natural morning light hit our eyes, signaling to our biological clock that it’s time to be fully alive and awake.
- Cellular Presence: It’s sitting quietly in the light for ten minutes—without a phone, a podcast, or a distraction—and consciously allowing that warmth to settle into our muscles and mind.
What Are Circadian Rhythms and How Do They Work?
When you begin to view the sun not as an external object, but as a core ingredient of your body, your relationship with the world shifts. You realize that vitality isn’t something you manufacture out of thin air; it’s something you absorb, metabolize, and reflect.
Only when we learn to truly internalize this light—to eat it, feel it, and align with it—do we unlock the full depth of energy and presence available to us.
“In everything that you eat, drink, and breathe, there is an element of the sun.”
