Raksha Bandhan: The Essence in Modern Times

Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival celebrating the bond of love of a brother and sister. It is celebrated in the Hindu month of Shravana (July/August) on the full moon day. The day is marked by tying a rakhi on the wrist of a brother by the sister and is done with the essence of praying for their long life and happiness.

Raksha Bandhan is about celebrating their relationship and – it’s a day full of good food, gifts, and kind words.

The new-age Raksha Bandhan is no longer the need for protection from a brother of your family. In urban India, women are socially and financially independent and are no longer the same as their predecessors’ were decades ago. Today it’s more about mutual love, care, and being with each other whenever needed. The idea of protection that was held so much importance to this festival has translated into something that identifies more with feelings of affection and celebration now.

Traditionally this festival only gave importance to the blood relationship of brothers and sisters and has now expanded to take everyone as part of the celebration for whom you feel a bond of affection – the single child, siblings who are girls, pets, trees, grandchildren.

Celebration of Rakhi in modern times might not fit into the norm. The patriarchal undertones of the festival seem to be fading away, leaving it as a celebration of affection and sibling love. The beauty of this festival, in this age for most millennials, the urban working class or nuclear families and people living away from home – is when they get together and try to recreate family memories again.
